Dog Dayz of Summer - Keep your Pets Safe...

What is the MOST Dangerous Season for your Pet? Try – Summer!!! http://ping.fm/zEY7w

Summer is the time of year when we are out with our pets.  We are busy cutting the grass or working in the garden and doing a pile of other chores.  However, before you get the mower and fertilizer out, please do a safety check of the plants and yard products you use in your home and out in your yard. Some of these tools are potentially life-threatening hazards for your pets.

Be sure to read the labels.

Read the labels on all products you use in and around the house. This includes directions  and actions in case of poisoning.  You can easily check the toxicity and first aid protocols for any chemical by going to Google and typing in “MSDS:” and then the chemical substance.  Using products that are safe for your pet can save you a lot of money in long run.

Keep an eye on your pet.

This is just common sense. No one lets their toddler run loose in the yard unsupervised.  So, it just makes sense that you wouldn't let you pet run loose unmonitored either. Preventable accidents are termed “preventable” for a reason. It only takes a minute for that accident to take place.

Know when and how to induce vomiting.

Vomiting should only be induced when the poison ingested is known or if your Veterinarian recommends vomiting.  If the substance swallowed is caustic (bleach, pool cleaner, acids, etc.), it burns on the way down and will burn on the way back up.  Also, there is the danger that the caustic substance could get into the airway, which can be deadly. If caustic, then it is best not induce vomiting but get to the Emergency clinic immediately so the pet’s stomach can be pumped.  Hydrogen peroxide is recommended for inducing vomiting, so be sure to have it on hand in your pet first aid kit.

Call your emergency animal hospital first, not Animal Poison Control.

Why?  Because calling an 800 number takes up valuable time.  Losing time is the biggest enemy when it comes to first and and treatment of your pet.  Be sure you know where a 24-hour emergency animal hospital is with a veterinarian on staff.  Develop a good  relationship with the staff of the clinic. Let them know who you and your pets are. Then when something happens (God-forbid) you call the emergency animal hospital. They have probably already dealt with or encountered whatever you are currently experiencing and will know how to immediately assist you with the correct response protocols.

Get trained and current in pet CPR and first aid.

Look up online where there is a course near you.

Be Proactive!

Make a routine at the beginning of each month to identify the potential environmental and holiday dangers that could come up with your pet. A good example this time of year is the mushrooms that grow so quickly in our yards after the rains; they can be extremely attractive and deadly to your pets. Cocoa mulch that is getting popular in the gardening section is attractive and toxic to our pets (and wildlife) and should not be used.  Also, summer is the time of year that mouse, rat and snail poisons are frequently and too generously used. The list goes on and on.

Traveling With Your Pet! www.first6monthswithyourpet.com

Traveling tips courtesy of:    Traveling Pets

  • Keep in mind that pets can suffer from heatstroke when left in a confined space or in a hot vehicle. Take extra care to be sure there is ample ventilation. When in a car or motorhome, leave at least two windows open slightly to provide fresh ventilated air and be sure to park in the shade. Consider a solar powered fan, one that fits snugly into the window and is powered by the sun.

  • Be sure that you have provided at least one bowl of water for your pet to drink and, if you're going to be out for an extended period, add one or two more, just in case.

  • Make a definite point to always clean up after your pet. Places that allow pets are making a special accommodation and if we want to feel that our pets are welcome, we must not abuse the privilege. Treat the areas where you walk as if it were you own yard. Your courtesy will spread to others.

  • When traveling with your pet, and especially when sending them via cargo on an aircraft, freeze water so that it will not fall out during loading, but will melt by the time your pet is thirsty.

  • Make sure the crate that your pet travels in is in top condition and is labeled in multiple places. It is a good idea to tape around the bottom of the kennel. It will keep people from opening the door and you never know if your dog will push or jump against the door and spring it open.

  • After you're sure that your pet is welcome at the hotel or resort you are staying at, request a room at the end of the hall and away from the ice machine and/or pool area. The quieter the room, the fewer errant barks to worry about.

  • Be sure to carry a current copy of your pet's health certificate from the veterinarian in addition to their food and toys!

  • Do not let your dog put his head out of a moving vehicle, this can lead to eye injuries.

The Cat Tree - www.first6monthswithyourpet.com

A cat tree is a wonderful cat "accessory" to have in your home. It is very important to put it in the right location or your kitty will ever use it.

Since your cat probably enjoys spending time near you, it will use the tree more if it were located in a family-occupied area.
If you place the cat tree in a guest room where no one goes, your cat will either ignore it or it will feel the need to isolate itself from you, and that's something that neither of you would want.

The ideal spot is near a window in a room where your family spends time, such as a den or living room.

Klepto Kitty Piles up the Loot

GENEVA - Forget mice. A Swiss cat named Speedy has an eye for finer things.

Speedy has stolen so much loot that its owner had to post leaflets throughout a northern Swiss town saying "Help, our cat steals!" and inviting people to recover their missing things.

Margrit Geiger of Wiesendangen said her kleptomaniac cat switched three years ago from bringing home mice to stealing badminton shuttlecocks, all to impress her teenage son.

Then the cat began specializing in gloves, scarves and T-shirts. The latest obsession: underwear and black socks.

Geiger told the Swiss daily Blick the cat has nabbed more than 100 items, and the paper said Thursday some neighbours have already claimed items back.

Veterinarian Brigitte Buetikofer says animals steal to gain attention, so ignoring them is the best cure.

Cowboy Up!

A few weekends ago, my family was given the opportunity to go horseback riding.  What great fun!  The kids enjoyed how gentle such a large animal could be with them.  I enjoyed seeing my kids up on a horse.  After the kids were finished, my friend and I went for a more "grown-up" ride.  Racing around the field...what a freedom.  It is a feeling unlike any other.

Unfortunately, for many years, riding a horse was an activity I had given up.  Once you get married, have children, get a full-time job, life has a way of just passing you by.  In my "older days" now, I think I'd like to live the life of The Horse Whisperer.  To have a job that allows me to work with horses every day.     The Horse Whisperer  That is my dream job.

I Have Learned YouTube!

What is so special about that?

Up until 3 months ago, my experiences with the computer were limited to:

1. Entering data for my pet sitting business

2. Playing games on Facebook

3. Playing more games on Facebook

I've been looking for a way to earn extra money from home for quite a while. It's so frustrating, though, with all of the scams and get rich quick schemes out there. When I heard that Donna Partow, author of Making Money From Home (published by Focus on the Family) was offering a training program, I was determined to see if I could get accepted.

Well, guess what? I got accepted into the Home Business Apprenticeship Program and now I'm being personally trained by someone who's generated MILLIONS of dollars in sales from her home office. Donna has worked from home for more than 20 years, so she knows exactly what she's doing.

It's such a relief to know I'm learning the right way to earn money from home, rather than wasting my time and money on stupid internet scams. Plus I found out: just by working from home, I can file a Schedule C (profit and loss from your own business) and Form 8829 (Business Use of my Home) along with my Tax Return and I'll save an average of $2,800 per year on taxes. That's an extra $233 in my pocket every month, just for setting up a home office.

Now I can legally write-off a portion of my mortgage, home owners insurance, car, car insurance, health insurance, the cost of running errands around town (I drop off flyers and business cardsd everywhere I go) and so much more. I figure even if I don't start making money right away (Donna is honest about the fact that there's no such thing as overnight riches), just by starting a business, I'm already helping my family by keeping $233 per month of our hard-earned money in our own bank account, rather than sending it to the IRS.

Well, that's just a small example of what I'm learning in the Home Business Apprenticeship. I don't know if you have the qualifications for the program, but you should definitely look into it.

Blogging Outside The Litter Box

Cat Urinating Problems?

I recommend taking your cat to the Veterinarian immediately.  You need to specify that the cat is urinating outside the litter box.  Be sure to mention any loud vocalizations by the cat when the urinate.  Peeing outside the box is a primary symptom of Urinary Tract Disorders.

If your cat gets the OK from your Vet, you may want to make the following changes:

1.  Try changing the type of litter you are using…because overly sweet-scented litter material irritates the cat

2.  Make sure you scoop the litter box daily.  More often, if you have more cats!!

3.  Have more than one box if you have more than one cat…a box a cat is best…

4.  Keep the boxes separate from each other because if they are too close, your cat may assume its one big litter box and not like the smell coming from a full one next to it.

These are just a few suggestions.  You can, however, check out the items listed below for more information.

Dealing with the Loss of your Pet

Recently, a friend of mine had to put his very old and very sick dog to rest.  Less than a week later, he adopted  another puppy!  After I had to let my old Shep/Husky cross go, I refused to even think about adopting another pet for nearly 2 years.  Everyone deals differently...

How have you dealt with the loss of your pet in the past?  How did your children (if you had them) deal with the loss?  How did you let your children know it was time for "Fluffy" to go?     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uegRK73m4sQ
